It's the 1950s in small town Texas. Claire Chastain reflects on her childhood as the pampered daughter of the town's leading citizen whose traditional world of perfection is toppled when Libby, a poverty-stricken ten-year-old, comes to town and exposes Claire to life on the other side of the tracks. The girls are instantly attracted and bond in ironclad friendship as they face the heartbreak of family crisis and loss. Libby is forced to give up her family in exchange for comfort and security with a local ranch family. She suffers the emotional consequences of guilt, abandonment and isolation as she struggles to adapt. Claire is blindsided by her mother's devastating illness and her ensuing conflicts with her beloved father. The girls experience the challenges and joys of confronting life's inevitable changes and discover the power of hope and forgiveness and the inner strength of their beliefs and commitment to family and friendship.
