Synopsis

“A blistering and breathless psychological thriller guaranteed to hold you captive...” (Bestthrillers.com)

City girl Amy seems to have it all—the high-flying job, the designer wardrobe, a beautiful home. But beneath the successful façade, Amy has secrets she’d rather her bully-boy boss Ed didn’t discover—like her troubled past and the little voice she hears in her head…
When a junior colleague is murdered, Amy’s fragile equilibrium is shattered. She suspects a client’s fraud links Ed to the killing, but is her paranoia working overtime?
As Ed tries to discredit her, Amy fears for her job, her sanity and her life. But she’s a tough professional, not a quitter, and somehow she must find a way to fight back...

Concealment is the second novel of British author Rose Edmunds. It’s a dark psychological thriller set in the cut-throat environment of the City of London, in which a high-flying executive struggles to expose the truth about fraud and murder in a toxic, corrupt workplace. At its heart, this is the story of one woman's struggle against her own insecurities - a universal theme.

Praise for Concealment:

“Concealment is brilliant thriller set in the cut-throat world of high finance.” (Scatterbooker blog)

“What makes this novel special is the way the author illuminates Amy’s deteriorating mindset”. (A Woman’s Wisdom blog)

“The psychological harassment handed out to the lead character made me weep it was so realistically portrayed” (Senior HR professional)

“Amy's own descent into psychological hell is fabulously well done, and I found the parts that looked back into her childhood absolutely fascinating”. (Terry Tyler book blog)

“There is treachery and confusion in a story I couldn’t put down!” (Lost in a book blog)

“Edmunds plays on Amy’s vulnerabilities like a master violinist” (Bestthrillers.com)

‘Matt shivered at the odd mix of images. It was almost as if they had the copper’s nightmare to deal with - a child’s murder. Except this was no innocent child but a young woman, he would guess around twenty-two and with everything to live for. Though it was obvious she was a woman, the bows in her hair, her pink party dress and white ankle socks said she was a little girl.’

However, struggling within the confines of his new marriage, and haunted by a past mistake, Matt finds it difficult to concentrate.

Book cover image for So What Do I Do?: A Crime Thriller from the High School (So What! Series Book 3)
View full details

Synopsis

This is a thriller of the “How&Why’d they do it?” category and the book stands alone with its intriguing trail of catch-up between the police and the criminals. It's in the "Columbo style" of a mystery where you see the crime committed then watch all of the recriminations unfold around it while detective Shantra pieces clues together and tracks down the felons.

A crime that goes badly wrong in its execution, and goes on to tragically affect the local school community, produces a trail of chaos. It’s a winding trail that the reader must try to follow and which two ex-pupils from the school, one a detective and the other his violent quarry, take around Britain only to end at its shocking conclusion.

In So What Do I Do?, the third novel in the So What! series, we see the return of a few of readers' favourite characters from the previous books. Constable Nigel Shantra returns as a detective, determined to bring to justice Kyle Crabbe, the psychotic adversary of his from the first So What! novel. And just what does a class of cheeky chimps, and a large black spider monkey, have to do with the traumatic events surrounding Hodgson's Hide - the legacy of retired Technology teacher Gil Hodgson?

Molly is back also, now as an experienced teacher and a new mum. She's trying to come to terms with the major changes planned for Birch Green High School, while she and Oliver have dramatic plans of their own that could seriously affect both their careers. Still anxious to save the natural environment and its wildlife, Molly is also troubled by the plight of the neglected children of the world and climate change. Is she ever going to settle down to a blissful life of domesticity with her family when so many problems insist on grabbing her attention?

When a conspiracy to defraud the local populace, devised by two apparently respectable but unscrupulous pillars of the community, goes disastrously wrong it results in an intriguing case for detective constable Shantra to solve. The traumatic events that ensue will prove to affect the haplessly incompetent pair of criminal perpetrators, hired by the swindling conspirators, as well as the teachers and pupils of Birch Green High School.

Recently promoted Molly discovers that the pressures of helping newly qualified teachers, like James Gibborn, to cope with unruly classes bear no comparison to the eventual strain that she and her colleagues experience when an ex-pupil of the school decides it’s time for payback. This bullying past enemy of Nigel Shantra and his brother, Adam, will prove to be far more ruthless and cruel than anyone could have imagined in order to achieve his criminal ambitions. But he is just as likely to turn his attention towards anyone who upsets his plans, with terrifying consequences for those who won’t comply with his wishes.

Book cover image for The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles
View full details

Synopsis

The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles tells a gripping story about memorable characters and resurrects a time and place that, perhaps more than any, created the modern world.

“Kuhlken mixes historical and fictional characters with an ease that will remind many of Max Allan Collins’s Nate Heller series (True Crime, etc.). He’s equally adept at melding the murder inquiry with Hickey’s personal struggles.” ~ Publishers’ Weekly

Throughout 1926, Harry Chandler used the persuasive reach of his Los Angeles Times to assure that railroads were out, and cars were in.

And in May of that vital year, celebrity evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson went swimming at Ocean Park beach and vanished, presumed drowned. Millions mourned or prayed for her miraculous return. On June 23, she walked out of the Mexican desert and crossed the border into Douglas, Arizona.

Though her story of a kidnapping convinced her followers, the district attorney didn’t buy it. A grand jury hearing was underway when a lynching happened in Echo Park, only yards from Sister Aimee’s Angelus Temple. The victim was an old friend of Tom Hickey, whose distress is aggravated because the police and popular media have apparently conspired to deny the lynching occurred.

Tom, who leads a dance orchestra and works days selling meat, adds to his jobs the pursuit of killers who may belong to the Ku Klux Klan. The investigation leads him to Angelus Temple and Sister Aimee, whose sermon entitled “The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles” provides him with clues and suspects. They include publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst and Harry Chandler, infamous owner of the Los Angeles Times.

Tom chooses to risk losing his job and family to follow the lead, though even his oldest friend and mentor, fellow detective Leo Weiss, passionately opposes Tom’s decision.

En route, he meets a young Dust Bowl refugee intent on avenging the enslavement of his sister by an L.A. cop on temporary border duty in Yuma. What he learns in Tucson sends Tom up against newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst. He hopes to enlist Leo before confronting Hearst. But Leo reveals the reason he’s tried to keep Tom from investigating: evidence that Tom’s father was hardly the gentle fellow his children believed.

Synopsis

Murder on the Sky Ride, Fiction/Mystery

This novel is full of action and good detective work. It also gives a picture of the diverse ethnic and cultural makeup of Texas. It gives a private view of two Texas families, one whose members range from dope smuggler to successful attorney-politician, and the other ranging from a hot-head Chicano activist to a Texas Ranger.

Some of the characters: Gar Garcia, Texas Ranger under special orders of the governor; Steve Pearce, 21, ex-convict, trying to stay out of trouble but not succeeding; Johnny Diaz, almost, but not quite, bad to the bone; Burke Masters, big man with big money; and Hawknose, career criminal.

The story is set in San Marcos, Texas, at an amusement park located where the San Marcos River, as a giant spring, wells up out of the ground cool and clear. San Marcos is a real city but events and characters portrayed there are fictional. Real people are mentioned, such as Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter, but are not characters.

Historical notes about the Texas Rangers are accurate. The mammalian diving reflex described in the novel is accurate, as well as the homicide exclusion in insurance policies, and oil field technicalities, but events surrounding them are fictional.

The story takes place in 1978 when detectives had to work harder than now. They had two-way radios, telephone beepers, but no cell phones or personal computers. Most police departments had no computers at all. Police reports were laboriously typed out by hand over several carbon copies, the last of which were barely legible. Police work was real work. Go along with Texas Ranger Gar Garcia as he works through clues, diversions, and deception.

Some of the other characters that lend color to the story include, Emo Etto a Nigerian soldier of fortune; Wan Ol Key, a 130-pound martial arts expert using a Mongolian passport; Sheikha Eisha ben Ali, wife of a mysterious Arab of questionable existence, who can charm the gold out of men’s pockets; Handsome Jòrge Sanchez, a Panamanian lover of women and gold; Nurse Alberta Shehzad whom Hank covets; Emile Deutchmann, South African soldier of fortune; and two beautiful young women, Gayle and Katie, who are involved more than they know.
Regardless of numerous suspects and possibilities, Hank’s excellent detective work triumphs.
If you like mysteries, action, interesting characters, frequent changes of scenes, an adventure story with romance, but no gutter language, you will like this novel.

Synopsis

School’s out for the summer, and Eye Spy Investigations have a new case - looking for Lady in Red, a lost masterpiece by Victorian painter, Gabriel Pascoe. The clock is ticking for Alex and Donna, because the artist’s house, Acacia Villa, where their friend Jake lives, is due to be demolished, and vital clues may be destroyed. And Alex has an additional problem: he is terrified of snakes, and Jake has a pet snake called Queenie…

As the twins pursue their enquiries, they come up against the man who wants to demolish Acacia Villa. But Mr Mortimer is the godfather of their baby half-sister, Sophie, and criticising him could open up family rifts, which have only just healed. Then Queenie goes missing, setting in motion a disastrous train of events that will turn the search for Lady in Red into the twins’ most dangerous case yet.

Synopsis

THE TROUBLE WITH TROUBLE is a powerful erotic thriller set in a Sheffield police station. The story follows on from The Trouble With Liam but can be read as a standalone. When a forensic scientist invents a potent sexual arousal cream called Trouble, it causes huge problems for DCI Jeremy Cosgrove, his beautiful, sex-addicted liaison officer, Kate Pendleton, and two other women who also work at the station. It’s a tale of blackmail, lust, secrets, hidden identities, and murder. The Trouble With Trouble is like Line of Duty but with explicit sex.

"Outrageous."

Be warned. As with book 1 in the Trouble series, The Trouble with Trouble isn’t a book for the faint-hearted or easily shocked. I’ve written two more books in the Trouble series which can also be read as standalones. I hope to publish books 3 and 4, Trouble In Cornwall and Troubled in late 2020.

Book cover image for The Ryder Quartet

Synopsis

The Ryder Quartet comprises four crime thrillers. Each of them is also separately available as an independent book. In this collection they form an overall cohesive narrative. Detective Jeremy Ryder and his colleagues pursue heinous criminals into the depths of the criminal underworld. The action takes place in Durban, South Africa, but the confrontation between the forces of law and justice on the one hand and criminal machinations on the other make these four stories relevant to any major city in the world. The author's field work involved detective-guided tours through forensic analysis, to the front line of drug dealing, and into the private pain of victims of crime. Readers of the individual volumes have hailed the work as action-packed thrillers steeped in authenticity and plausibility, reflecting the real world of police encounters with the dark world of crime.
