Biography

Peter Bayer is one of South Africa’s best known journalists of the apartheid era, working for the internationally famous Rand Daily Mail – for many years the country’s pre-eminent anti-apartheid media voice – and The World (a so-called ‘Black’ newspaper) in the early seventies. He was also a prolific magazine feature writer and photojournalist. After the closure of the Rand Daily Mail in 1985, he published educational newspapers for rural southern Africans and, in recent times, has pursued a career in academia, writing and lecturing on a variety of Journalism and communications degree modules. Widely travelled and an avid adventurer, he has a passion for jazz and blues, is a published cartoonist and poet, and is a keen sportsman. He holds postgraduate degrees in Journalism and Media Studies and Creative Writing. The Last Mentsch, his second published work, was written in fulfilment of a Masters in Creative Writing, awarded cum laude at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013.
Peter Bayer lives in Johannesburg with his magazine publisher wife, Jocelyne. He has three sons and one grandson.
